Considering abortion? Pregnancy confirmation is necessary to determine what type of abortion procedure you may be eligible for. Confirm your pregnancy today with free pregnancy testing and a limited ultrasound at our center.

Medical Exam

Our caring nurses can answer medical questions you have, on topics such as abortion procedures and risks, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, health concerns, and more. Heartbeats does not perform nor refer for abortion.

If you are considering a medical or surgical abortion consider:

  • Do I have a viable pregnancy?
  • How far along am I?
  • Have I already miscarried?
  • Do I have to have surgery?
  • Will I regret my decision?

1.) Verify Your Pregnancy

The first step in screening is to verify you’re actually pregnant. Even if you’ve taken an at-home pregnancy test and the result was positive, you’ll want to confirm the results. We offer clinical pregnancy testing that is 99% accurate.

Often, women take an at-home test too soon or don’t fully follow the directions. Our pregnancy tests are administered by medical professionals in a clinical setting to make sure you get the most accurate result.

Have you received a negative diagnosis after a pregnancy test? For questions or support, visit Prenatal Diagnosis.

2.) Get An Ultrasound

If your pregnancy test is positive, your next step will be a limited diagnostic ultrasound. We offer no-cost ultrasounds to confirm your pregnancy. An ultrasound reveals some important information you need before an abortion.

  • Is your pregnancy viable or have you had a natural miscarriage? (miscarriages occur in at least 20% of known pregnancies)
  • How long have you been pregnant? (the gestational age determines what type of abortion you would be eligible for)
  • Where is your pregnancy located? (it is extremely dangerous if you have an ectopic pregnancy, meaning it is not located in your uterus)

3.) Talk With Your Nurse

Once a viable pregnancy is confirmed, your nurse will discuss each of your pregnancy options with you.

Two Types of Abortion

Although Heartbeats is not an abortion provider, our caring medical professionals are here to answer your questions so you can make an informed decision regarding your pregnancy. If you are considering terminating your pregnancy, the procedure you would undergo depends on how long you’ve actually been pregnant.  If your pregnancy is ten weeks or less, that is usually a medical abortion. Beyond ten weeks, it would likely be a surgical abortion.

Medical Abortion

Also called “the abortion pill,” medical abortion involves two types of drugs. These two drugs work together to terminate an existing pregnancy.

The first drug prescribed in a medical abortion blocks the womb from absorbing progesterone and prevents the embryo from implanting or growing. The second drug causes the uterus to contract and expels the pregnancy.

Potential Risks of Medical Abortion

  • Incomplete abortion (may need to be followed by surgical abortion)
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Digestive system discomfort
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Chronic abdominal pain
  • Blood clotting
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of self-esteem
  • Sleep dysfunction
  • Guilt and remorse
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Relationship problems

Surgical Abortion

There are multiple types of surgical abortion procedures done depending on how far along you are. Generally, a surgical abortion involves dilating the cervix and inserting a small suction tube into the uterus to remove the fetus.

Potential Risks of Surgical Abortion

  • Damage to the womb or cervix
  • Uterine perforation
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes
  • Scarring of the inside of the uterus
  • Reaction to the medicines or anesthesia, such as problems breathing
  • Not removing all of the tissue, requiring another procedure
  • Chronic abdominal pain
  • Blood clotting
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of self-esteem
  • Sleep dysfunction
  • Guilt and remorse
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Relationship problems
