What is love? Have you found yourself questioning what truly defines love? We see interpretations of love in movies, shows, and through our childhood. Love is romantic, love is sad, love is painful, love is a feeling. Merriam Webster defines love as “a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties.”We may think we are in “love” then we see the two pink lines. Seeing these can bring great excitement or intense fear. Many are not prepared for this; I know I wasn’t when I was 19. I wasn’t in love. I didn’t want to be married to this boy who was not yet a man. How can I possibly be a mom? Can you relate?

Pregnant! Now What

While these two pink lines may represent the unplanned, the unwanted, the undesired, they also represent a life. A child is already forming, growing, inside of you as those two pink lines hold your attention. According to the American Pregnancy Association the brain, spinal cord, gastrointestinal tract, and heart begin to develop. I can assure you there is development happening in your heart too.

Regretfully, I chose abortion when I was 19. I convinced myself I wasn’t ready to be a mother, I couldn’t do this, I was ruining this child’s life. My actions did ruin this child’s life, I learned within minutes I made a mistake. I loved this child. I would always love this child. I realized too late.

You may be thinking you can’t possibly be a mother, but the truth is you already are. You have a personal tie to your child. Love is an innate response to being pregnant; you already love this child. So, again, what is love?

What the Bible says

We know the dictionary definition, we see the World’s definition, but let’s see what the bible, which speaks of love often, has to say. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 says “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”

Many know the verse John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

What can we take from this? Love is an action. Love is selfless. Love is kind and does what is right for the one we are loving. Although you may be feeling fear and panic as you bear the weight of those two pink lines, I want to assure you of two things.

Two Things

1. You are loved.

2. You can choose what is right for your child, and you, through love.

I can also tell you what love is not; it is not abortion. Abortion is death & pain. You will still love your child afterwards, but it will be brimming with pain, regret, self-hatred, and grief.

To Love we protect, we nurture, we provide. You CAN DO THIS! You can seek out assistance and support from local pregnancy crisis centers like Heartbeats. You can make an educated choice of what is right for you and your child. You can choose to parent this child with your partner, as a single mother, or through an adoption seeking couple. You can protect and nurture this sweet baby till delivery. What is love? This is love. Choosing life is love.
