As I washed my hands, the warm water flowed through my fingers and my mind began to race. What if the pregnancy test I just took is positive? I’m not ready to be a mom and my boyfriend certainly isn’t ready to be a dad. We have our whole lives ahead of us and a baby would change our future. What will our parents say? Will my dad kick me out of the house? I know my mom will cry.

Are you in this same situation? Are you pregnant and not sure what to do and believe abortion is the answer? The most important thing you can do in this moment is to give yourself time. Don’t rush into making any decisions. You need to think through your situation and process all the emotions involved with being pregnant. You could feel scared one moment and excited the next. All of this is normal.

The next key step is to find your local life-affirming pregnancy center. They are trained and have valuable resources to help guide you through your unplanned pregnancy. They can speak directly to your situation and offer you information on your options.

Abortion has many risks involved and you need to make an informed decision. Not only can there be physical side effects from abortion, but it can also affect you spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Some physical side effects reported are infertility, miscarriage, and infection. Emotional side effects could be depression, drug abuse, nightmares and/or flash backs to name a few. Let’s think about your spiritual life. Does abortion go against your personal beliefs?

Abortion is serious and you don’t want to rush into a decision right away. Abortion will not make all your fears go away and let everything return to normal. Life will change whether you have an abortion or not, but you can have hope. Take a deep breath and focus on now. You don’t have to have the next year planned out or know the future.

You also need to reach out to someone you know you can trust. Do you have a best friend or an aunt you can lean on? Maybe you can go directly to your parents. If you don’t believe you have someone like that, your local pregnancy center has people who care about you and what you are going through. They want to help and offer you support. You are not alone. They have all been through circumstances in their own lives and can equip you for what’s ahead.

Slow down and take a deep breath. Talk to someone you trust and call your local pregnancy center. If they are closed, you can call the 24 hour hotline at 1-800-712-HELP (4357). People are there to listen to your concerns. They care about you and can help with what you need.
