Do I Need An Ultrasound?

Yes! An ultrasound is the only way to confirm your pregnancy options. It will confirm three important details of your pregnancy, including:

  1. Viability (If your pregnancy is healthy and growing)
  2. The location of your pregnancy (whether it’s growing within the uterus or not)
  3. How far along you are (gestational age)

As abortion may be something you’re considering, an ultrasound is essential to date your pregnancy, as chemical abortions (aka the “abortion pill”) are only recommended by the FDA for pregnancy through 70 days gestation (70 days or less since the first day of a woman’s last menstrual period).

An ultrasound will also alert you to any possible pregnancy complications like miscarriage or a possible ectopic pregnancy (where the pregnancy grows outside of the uterus).

How Does An Ultrasound Work?

Ultrasound exams use high-frequency sound waves to look inside a woman’s body. Because the sound is at such a high frequency, it cannot be heard with the human ear.

These sound waves are directed at the internal body from a small vibrating crystal in a hand-held scanner called a “transducer.” The scanner reflects the sound (echoes) to create an image.

Be Sure

Even though pregnancy tests are very accurate, they do not guarantee that you have a viable pregnancy. The only way to find out for sure, is to have an ultrasound. Regardless of which option you are considering for your pregnancy, it is important to have an ultrasound.

Before getting an ultrasound at our center, schedule a free pregnancy test. Once confirmed, we offer a free ultrasound to determine your options.
