It’s also known by other names, including medication abortion, medical abortion, chemical abortion, RU-486, Mifepristone, and Mifeprex®. Additionally, “Plan C” can refer to an organization that offers resources and information about the abortion pill. These terms are often used interchangeably.
How Does Plan C Work?
Plan C involves a two-step process using two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol.
- Step 1: Mifepristone is the first pill taken. It works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is essential for maintaining pregnancy. Without progesterone, the embryo can no longer grow, ultimately leading to its termination.
- Step 2: Misoprostol is taken 24-48 hours after mifepristone. This medication induces cramping and bleeding, which helps expel the embryo from the uterus.
The combination of mifepristone and misoprostol, often referred to as “Plan C,” is FDA-approved for use within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy (up to 70 days from the start of your last menstrual period).

Additionally, if you feel generally unwell—such as weakness, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea—especially for more than 24 hours after taking misoprostol, you could have a serious infection and should contact a healthcare provider right away.
- Severe Abdominal or Pelvic Pain: Any intense pain in these areas should also prompt a visit to a medical professional.
