Is the abortion pill safe?

You might have heard that there’s a “quick and easy” way out of an unplanned pregnancy with the abortion pill.  But is this really accurate?  And is it even safe?

If you think you may be pregnant, but having a baby right now seems impossible, you might be trying to figure out if a medical abortion, also known as the Abortion Pill-is the right option for you.

The Abortion Pill is an option up to 11 weeks of pregnancy, but some doctors will only offer the procedure up to the ninth week of pregnancy.  This procedure is incredibly dangerous if you are too far along in your pregnancy.

The abortion pill is actually a series of medication that causes an abortion.  Although abortion stats are as high as “1 in 4” women reporting that they have had an abortion, the side effects are high as well.

Because the abortion pill can be purchased online, many women end up having an at-home abortion using this method.  This means that there is not a doctor to supervise care both during and after this procedure.

Documented side effects include blood loss, hemorrhaging, cramping, dizziness mild fever, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, seeing embryonic parts expelled, and a possible life-threatening infection known as sepsis (severe systemic infection),

Many women also report experiencing emotions like sadness, stress, or feelings of guilt. You may need to seek care from a mental health specialist (like a therapist or counselor) if the emotions become intense or overwhelming.

Abortion medication does not work for everyone. If the abortion medication fails, this may require an additional surgical abortion procedure to complete the termination.  Because this abortion procedure has so many risks, proper medical follow-up is important.

No matter what options you are considering with your pregnancy, the safest way to move forward is by only choosing care from a licensed medical provider.

At Heartbeats, we can provide you with a free ultrasound if you are considering an abortion. 20% of first trimester pregnancies will end in miscarriage not requiring an abortion.
